Bernal Dwellings Completed and Occupied in 2001

This was a 208 unit 400 bedroom severely distressed public housing high rise development located in the Mission District of San Francisco. The new 160 large townhouses and flats were completed in September 2001 with a total of 407 bedrooms, childcare space, a computer learning center, resident business incubator space and a multi-purpose facility.

During construction (see picture) resident apprentices worked along with union workers to complete the construction of the site on time and on budget. The SFHA requires that public housing residents work 25% of construction work force hours. SFHA was the developer of the site.

Defensible design features include front door off right of way, private back yards, secured trash access areas and fenced-in play yards.
