Valencia Gardens Redevelopment

Valencia Gardens Before and After
The new pedestrian friendly residential development will
open its doors to the community on Valencia Street.

Located in San Francisco's Mission District, the new family development will replace 246 dilapidated and blighted public housing units with 260 new mixed income flats and townhouse units with multi-purpose facilities. The revitalization also includes a new ancillary senior housing site with 60 new apartments and a new senior center.

Defensible design features include front door off right of way, private back yards and decks, secured trash access areas and fenced-in play yards.

(Due for completion in 2005)

  • Developer: Mission Housing Development Corporation

  • Property Manager: The John Stewart Company

  • $23.2 M in HOPE VI Funds and $39.4 M in other Funds=$63.6 M

  • Proposed Product - All 246 existing public housing apartments will be completely replaced with new construction on site. After the HOPE Revitalization, there will be 260 apartments and 568 bedrooms on-site.

  • The Valencia Gardens HOPE VI Revitalization Program gave way to development activities at the under-utilized portion of the Rosa Parks Senior Center (1111 Buchanan) that could be an appropriate location to develop another 60 units of senior housing. A deteriorating senior services building currently occupies the site, and will be replaced by the proposed program given approval and funding availability.
