Wait List Ranking Explanation
The SFHA's waitlist preference scheme is as follows (any one of the "three preferences" categories awards you 8 points):
- Paying over 50% of your income for rent,
- Living in substandard housing or homeless, or
- You are being involuntarily displaced by your landlord, by government action, due to a natural disaster or due to domestic violence.
Additionally, the following criteria adds points to these preferences:
- if you are cooperating with the District Attorney to testify in a pending matter and are in need of witness protection and relocation you receive the highest amount of points, 16.
- Being a resident of or employed in San Francisco awards you 4 points;
- Being a Veteran awards you two additional points;
- If you are a participant in a State Welfare to Work Program you are awarded 1 point.
If you have one or more preferences they are cumulative (the points are added together to a total).
It should be noted that the waitlist is not static. Applicants’ situations may change at any given time and therefore they may receive more or fewer points. The result is that you may be placed at a lower or higher position on the waitlist.
The SFHA totals each applicant’s points assigned for their eligible preferences. The wait list is then rank-ordered, by number of points and in date and time order, in descending order (highest to lowest). Applicant information is verified upon mutual acceptance of an offer of assistance. All eligibility criteria, including preferences are verified at that time. If eligibility information cannot be verified at this time, the family returns to the waitlist in the appropriate rank order.
The SFHA will rank and admit applicants from the waiting list in accordance with the following priority categories:
Point Allocation
- WRAP = 16 Points – Absolute Preference
- LP = 8 Pts
- Resident = 4 Pts
- Veteran = 2 Pts
- Welfare to Work = 1 Pt.
